Forgiveness And Renewal: 5 Easter Messages to Renew Your Alcohol-Free Journey

Forgiveness is at the heart of Christianity. So is renewal and starting over. These are important messages to understand if you find yourself consistently seeking forgiveness related to your choice of alcohol or another substance over God, your health, or your responsibilities to others.

For starters, don’t be so hard on yourself if your substance of choice is alcohol. Alcohol is now recognized as a highly addictive substance.  Please read our article titled Alcohol or Drug Dealer for more information about the addictive nature of alcohol. Plus, we have been primed since childhood to associate alcohol with every social function, holiday, and tradition out there from birth to death.  If we were not completely focused on Christ, we can easily be led astray. 2nd Corinthians 3:11 (ESV) states: But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. So, if you slipped into this habit, know you are not alone. You are in the company of 29 million other people who are also struggling and have been deceived with respect to the consequences of repeated and excessive use of alcohol (Source: National Survey on Drug Use and Health – NSDUH).

Many of us find ourselves at the foot of the cross in asking for forgiveness after drinking in excess because of the actions we took while under the influence.   While it is natural for all of us to make poor decisions in life, it is important to remember that drinking lowers inhibitions, so regrettable choices go hand-in-hand with substance-impaired brains! There is a reason God asks us to be sober minded in 1st Peter 5:8 (ESV) Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Sadly, there are events and situations we cannot take back. Regret is a real and painful thing that cannot be minimized.

Thankfully, God loves us so much.   He truly knows how easily we slip into sin, and how impossible it is for us to be free from our fleshly desires. That is why He sent his one and only son to save us.  He endured unspeakable suffering so that we could repent and ask for forgiveness so that we could wipe the slate clean for ourselves with the work He did on the cross.  This is a gift that cannot be earned.  It is not about what we did.  It is about what He did! As Easter approaches, and we reflect on the incredible sacrifice Jesus made for us, here are five Easter messages of forgiveness and renewal to propel us forward on our alcohol (or other substance)-free journey, so that we may all discover the plans God has for us.

Easter, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, offers profound lessons on moving beyond regret and embracing hope:

      1. New Beginnings: Easter symbolizes the ultimate new beginning—resurrection from the dead. No matter the depth of our regrets or failures, there is always an opportunity for renewal and a fresh start.

        1. Forgiveness: Central to the Easter story is the theme of forgiveness. Even in his greatest moments of suffering at the hands of the very people he was there to save, Jesus asked God, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34, ESV).  Jesus’ death and resurrection were for the redemption of humanity’s sins… This powerful message teaches us the importance of forgiving ourselves (and others). When it comes to our substance-free journey, this is a crucial step in moving past regret.

          1. Hope and Faith: Easter embodies hope—the belief that life can overcome death and light can prevail over darkness. It encourages us to have faith that we can overcome our past regrets and look forward to a brighter future. God has plans for each of us!

            1. Transformation and Growth: Just as Jesus’ resurrection shifted our understanding of life and death; Easter reminds us that our biggest regrets can lead to profound personal growth and transformation… if we learn from them. When we stop putting a substance first and instead place God at the helm, God promises us that he will turn all things to good. Even our worst mistakes can be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, ESV) Even when things get tough or don’t make sense, God has a way of arranging everything so that, in the end, even something negative and painful can be used for good.

              1. The Importance of Community: Easter is a time to come together as a community, emphasizing the role of support and love in overcoming challenges. It teaches us that sharing our regrets and vulnerabilities within a trusted community can be a powerful way to heal and move forward. Finding the right alcohol-free or substance-free group can provide a supportive way for dealing with regret, emphasizing renewal, forgiveness, hope, personal growth, and strength.

In conclusion, when drinking or using other substances become the focus of your life, regret can surely take center stage. Your choices from the past (or in the present) may be causing pain. However, lack of forgiveness is not going to help move you forward in your substance-free journey, whether you are on Day 0 or Day 6,000. God has a plan for YOU, and burying yourself in regret is not at all part of that plan: “‘For I know the plans I have for you, ’declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV).

Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice on the cross so that no matter what mistakes or sins we have made in the past, we can seek forgiveness and you promise us that it is granted.   By the grace of God, we can reset the course and adjust our navigation towards your hopes and dreams for us. When we put alcohol or any other toxic substance aside, we can immediately get back on track. We can move forward with the assurance that we are sons and daughters of God and ask Jesus to heal those places we regret. We can remind ourselves that we all fall short of the Glory of God (Romans 3:23).… That is why He came to save us.

            Happy Easter!
